Description
Dog's Head Hammer is made by Brandon Dearing.
It’s been called many things by different cultures. A dog’s head hammer, cutler’s hammer, or a Japanese styled hammer.
It's offset handle allows for very accurate and controlled hits, particularly when forging bevels.
This is what’s led to it being called a cutler’s hammer, because it excels at forging the bevels of a knife, and allows you to neatly forge your bevels from tip to choil.
The head itself is forged from 4140 hexagonal stock, which gives it a very crisp and unique look.
The eye is drifted from both ends to produce an hourglass double taper that gives a tight fit on to the handle. It’s then heat treated and tempered.
The hammer head has a hot-oiled finish, and you can see the golden bronze finish on the hammer head that is a natural result of the tempering process.
The face is ground to a 120 grit finish and then buffed to a semi-polished, semi-satin finish.
The handles are carved from hickory, which is the best wood available for striking tools. The handle is contoured so that it’s as comfortable as possible for swinging day in and day out.
The palm swells fit the contours of your hand and make for a comfortable fit. The hammer head has a Purpleheart wood wedge, which holds the hammer securely and makes for beautiful contrast between the hickory and steel. Several coats of linseed oil are applied to the hammer and handle.
